How Did I Begin? I started out by asking myself this question: What environment did I want to create? My response was immediate. The words that popped into my head were "sanctuary", "colorful", and "easy to maintain." I had a limited space in which to work: a fenced in area behind the house. The fence had been standing for over fifteen years, so it had character, i.e., moss growing over the wood, gouged corners, etc. Since I knew what kind of environment I wanted to design, a limited space, and desire for convenient maintenance, I visited my local nursery and began browsing the rows upon rows of plants and flowers. The variety for selection was astounding. In the end, I selected numerous perennials for planting and colorful annuals for hanging baskets, and pots. I wanted eye-popping colors like red, yellow, pink, purple, and orange. Accented by lush green foliage, I ended up with a breathtaking seating area. Figurines and Fountains
My Recommendations 1. Peruse some gardening books for ideas and plant types. 2. Select annual flowers that are easy to maintain. One of my favorites is petunias. With a little water and fertilizer, these flowers grow like crazy and are beautiful. (Although you have to snip off the old flowers, it's worth it). 3. Plant perennials. Your perennials will come up every year and become more breathtaking with each season. I highly recommend the many varieties of Hostas for shade loving areas. These are fabulous and within a couple of years, make grand coverings. Have great fun creating your paradise haven!
