"Winter Sunset:
Plainfield, Illinois"

Sunset 1.JPG (20865 bytes)On this particular Saturday afternoon, (February 2005), I decided to close the day with a relaxing outing.  The temperatures have been mild, teasing we Midwest dwellers that springtime is just around the corner.  The snow has nearly melted, leaving sodden grass, damp side walks, and muddy puddles.

As I typically do, I brought my camera with me.  Somehow I knew this outing would be something special.  I was right!

Most of the time we are too busy to stop and enjoy a sunset.  Of course, we enjoy a view when on vacation, particularly if holidaying in a tropical paradise.  I was reminded that we don't need to go out of town to enjoy the beauty of nature.  Spectacular sunsets are just over our shoulder.

I visited Plainfield, Illinois, which is growing by leaps and bounds.  Yet, there are still places where open farm fields and vast sky have not been captured by "progress".

This is the first photo I took upon my arrival.

A sizeable lake is nestled near a subdivision of homes.  The warm temperatures had encouraged the icy surface of the lake to melt.  The results were a spectacular landscape of textures, shadows, and reflections.  Besides, the path of the sun shooting a beam over the lake was captivating.

I decided to focus my photos on the lake and surrounding area.  I did not have much time since the sunset wasn't going to wait for me!

Observe the texture of the frozen water.  Beautiful!
I also found some surprises around the edge of the lake.  A loop of frozen rope was poking through the ice near the grassy edge.  Also, melting sheets of ice create interesting sculptures (bottom photo).
