The Victorians & Conversation
As in every generation, there was a set of rules when it came to the etiquette of conversation. Since a Victorian was seeking a higher level of discourse, she was required to follow the rules that governed Society. Of utmost importance was maintaining a cool, refined demeanor. Conversation was to be of a light content and amusing to the participants. The selection of vocabulary should be understandable and not sprinkled with "foreign words and high-sounding terms." To do so would welcome ridicule. Interestingly enough, some of the Victorian rules of conversation apply even today. It was advised that one never "make a parade of being acquainted with distinguished or wealthy people." In the 21st century, this is synonymous with "name dropping." Another recommendation was not to pry into the personal business of your fellow conversationalist. To inquire whether one "had a beau" or discuss the profitability of a business would be deemed most inappropriate. Some may argue that the art of conversation is a skill that has suffered into the 21st century. The respectful and knowledge-based conversation of the past has been exchanged for the fast-paced discussions of a new generation. In general, one of the characteristics of a Historical romance novel that readers enjoy is the refined language and etiquette of the period. Isn’t that the beauty of stepping into another era via the romance novel? In that world of imagination, we can relish the dialogue of an earlier age.
