The Lunchtime Walk
Sleepiness has overtaken me so my eyelids feel like steel panels. One more breathe will likely end in a sigh. I would gladly turn over my last dollar just for twenty winks. Unfortunately, napping in the middle of the day is not an option. Fortunately, I have learned that lunchtime walks revitalize my wilted energy like rain in the desert. Thank goodness I have discovered the cure for the afternoon sleepies. Walk! Walk as Part of the Day When you are a teenager or young adult, the body seems to have an endless reservoir of energy. Something happens, however, as those maturing years increase the decades. The stamina of youth seems to dissipate. Whether working a desk job, driving here and there in sales, or dashing off with the children on errands, we all eventually hit a wall. You may convincingly argue that you are too tired to make the effort to move your legs. However, I have found that making walking part of your day really works. In fact, the benefits of an afternoon walk, even for as little as 15 minutes, can do the trick. My Experience Walking In all aspects of my work, including my writing, I spend a great deal of time in front of a computer. Naturally, the physically sedentary activity is exacerbated by the lack of fresh air. In a period of time, I’m ready to venture out for oxygen and a change of scenery! My daily afternoon walk is always an adventure. As my senses awaken, a world of experiences opens to me. Have you ever taken the time to notice the sky? It is an ever changing canvas of color, shape, and texture. I particularly enjoy strolling through a mall. The fodder that awaits a walker is like a smorgasbord of sweets. Bargain shoppers, children in strollers, an elderly gentleman reading a paper - so many individuals and situations for people watching. And, we ALL enjoy people watching! I always learn something about myself by observing others. The Other Benefit - Time for Yourself As Modern Renaissance Women, we are all too aware that personal time is a rare commodity. It is important that you do take those moments for yourself. In fact, I encourage you to test out the afternoon walk. Begin by simply walking 15 minutes during your lunch hour. The next time you feel those afternoon dozies overtaking you, consider the lunchtime walk!
