In real life, a good reference was also critical for employment. Employers & References An employer put great stock in a potential employee's references. A servant had to have impeccable references to even be considered for a position. Newspaper Advertisements

The most frequently used words to describe a potential servant's capabilities and character were: "good character" or "good personal character."
