The Art of Public Speaking:
The Fear of Public Speaking
(Continued)

How to Overcome the Fear Factor

If you are plagued by the Fear Factor, there is hope. In fact, once you have decided to face your fear of public speaking, you are on ywpe4A.jpg (4871 bytes)our way to ascend to the next level of self-development. The most difficult step is the first step. You have to be ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED to conquer your fear. Once you have made the determination to succeed in your quest, you must identify the people, resources, and venues in which to accomplish your goal - to be an effective public speaker.

STEP I: Join a Public Speaking Organization

When we set out to overcome a challenge, it is important to become part of a strong support system with resources to meet that challenge. Your first step will be to locate the nearest public speaking group in your area. The most well known and acclaimed public speaking organization is Toastmasters International.

Toastmasters is a non-profit international organization whose sole purpose is to provide the environment whereby members can develop communication and leadership skills. Membership dues are nominal, but the benefits are numerous. Members receive a booklet that works you through ten speeches that target specific speaking skills, i.e., vocal variety, speech writing, using props, etc. The meetings also provide opportunities to speak through impromptu two minute speeches. Members also receive a monthly magazine that provides self-help articles, industry news, and convention news.

For more information and to locate a chapter in your area, see www.Toastmasters.org. If you want to overcome the Fear Factor and become an accomplished speaker, we highly recommend you join a Toastmasters club. You won't regret it!

STEP II: Expand Your Knowledge Foundation

Recommended Reading

Check out Peggy Noonan's two books on public speaking:

"Simply Speaking: How to Communicate Your Ideas With Style, Substance and Clarity" (ISBN:0-06-039212-6)

"On Speaking Well: How to Give A Speech With Style, Substance, and Clarity" (ISBN: 0-06-098740-5)

The import of expanding your knowledge foundation can not be over emphasized. Effective public speaking is not just overcoming fear and speaking in front of a group. There are different elements that work together to make you an accomplished speaker. The one sure way to learn these components and apply them to your self-development is to read.

Reading gives you access to the details about the craft of public speaking. In addition to the resources provided by Toastmasters International, there are books written by other speaking professionals and those in academia that are worth perusing. Visit your local bookstore or library to begin the process of knowledge development.

Successful Speaking Begins Today

Don't make the mistake of waiting until tomorrow to begin your ascent to the next level of self-development. Stretching your wings and taking flight to the higher realm of being will be your reward. To possess the skill of effective public speaking will provide you with a tool that will assist you in meeting success in both your personal and professional endeavors.
