Take note of the detail of each picture. You will notice that most photos of the period just before and after the turn of the century show unsmiling people. Unlike camera technology today, photos were not instantly processed. The subject had to remain perfectly still while the photo was taken.
Also of note is that many of the gentleman of the time wore mustaches. (Apparently, a fashion statement for men). In the following three photos, the men wear their mustaches long over the side of their mouth.
The bodice of the mother's dress dons many buttons down the center with matching buttons on the cuffs. The characteristic drawn back hair and cinched waist are typical. Of special note is her fan! Undoubtedly, the fan would open to reveal delicate feathers. Fans in this period were used for cooling, but also communication.
It would appear that mother took the time to create a makeshift tie using a scarf to dress up her son. If you look closely, the boy is wearing knee britches with long socks covering his legs.
We know that the father's name is Ed and this is his family. It is the eyes and mouth of each family member that catches your attention. There is no doubt that these folks are related. Well dressed and standing proudly, we wonder what conversation may have commenced once the photographer was done.
