The Victorians

The Civil War:  A Re-enactment

Civil War 003.jpg (58694 bytes)The U.S. Civil War was fought from 1861 through 1865.  The conflict between the American Union and the eleven Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America was a climatic event in 19th century America.

Men, women and children come together today in the form of Civil War En-enactments throughout the United States to reflect upon this time of war.  These people have a passion for history.  Many are diligent students of this time period studying everything from clothing, battle strategy, medicine and time period etiquette.  The women even wear corsets to ensure authenticity in their dress!

We had the opportunity to visit the Naper Settlement which holds their annual event in May. The Re-enactors welcome you to their 19th century world.

Soldiers: The Men of the War

A Civil War Re-enactment - Photo Archives
Photos Melissa Hamilton discovered in her father's collection.  Photos were taken at the Naper Settlement more than 10 years ago.  At this time, the re-enactors were using horses.

Confederatethree.JPG (23360 bytes)This family opted to camp out during the Civil War encampment weekend.  The evenings were particularly cool, even the lady's numerous layers of undergarments couldn't keep her warm.

We see an example of Confederate uniforms in this photograph, too.  Also note that the subjects are not smiling. Subjects could not move while their photograph was being taken lest the photo blur.

Campsite for the Union soldiers.  Notice how the rifles are stacked.  The rifles are crossed at the top using the bayonets. The unspoken etiquette was that one never walked between a line of stacked rifles.

civilwardoctor.JPG (16462 bytes)Visitors to the Civil War encampment have the opportunity to speak with the re-enactors.  This man is dressed in a Union uniform.  He is discussing the responsibilities of a doctor and reviewing a physician's instruments which are prominently displayed on the table. Also note the simple box that was used to bury soldiers killed in battle.

Covering the grounds of a Civil War encampment and talking with the re-enactors can make you thirsty!  There is always a place to purchase a refreshment.

The Civil War
North vs. South Perspective

Southern Perspective: Southerners refer to the war as "War between the States."  A southerner's perspective is that the Confederate States of America "formed an independent country with a constitutionally legitimate government."  The Confederacy "was based upon a just view of states' rights."

Northern Perspective: Northerners viewed that states has "no constitutional right to secede and set up a separate government."  They saw secession as rebellion again the Union.  Anyone who followed the secession was seen as a rebel.

Other designations for the Civil War: "War for Southern Independence," "Brothers' War," "American Iliad," and "Second American Revolution."

One of the highlights of the Civil War encampment is the re-enactment of the battles.  Continue to the next page to view scenes from the battle between the North and the South.
