The 1920s
The 1920s was a unique time in American history. It was the age of new music, fashion, and growing wealth. The stock market crash of 1929 and the commencement of The Great Depression would change the fabric of American society. The 1920s section of the Photo Gallery offers a look at the hair styles, hats and clothes of the period. It also provides a quiet reflection upon the men and women who were to enter a time of great economic and social difficulties.

Take note of Bernice's and Mira's hats. They sit low over the forehead and fit snuggly. Bernice's dress is just below her knee with a wide belt buckle riding low on her hips. Mira's husband is wearing a hat as well. Hats would continue to be worn by men and women through the 1950s.
This photograph of Elizabeth was taken in 1920 when she was twenty years old. Note her simple hair style, wavy and combed back to reveal the gentle softness of her face. This photograph also shows the style of a "soft focus" whereby the youth and beauty of the subject is enhanced by the blurring edges of the photograph.
