What Makes A Good Romance Story? Lindsay Longford commenced the discussion by posing a question to the group. "We are the people who are buying more than a few books a year. We read many areas of books. When we go to the romance shelf, we say "what do we really want?" Each of us had the opportunity to share what we really wanted in a good romance story. Here are some of the comments that were made:
The Fairy Tale The conversation then veered towards the Fairy Tale and how the heroine is viewed. Several examples were discussed including "Sleeping Beauty" (the virgin) and "Beauty & The Beast" (implied symbol, i.e., power of the woman to redeem.). No matter how beastly (Beauty & the Beast, for example) he is, the woman has the power to change him, to bring him within the circle of humankind. A Evening of Smiles & Pleasant Conversation Following a lively discussion, we identified four primary elements that make up a great romance story. These were: Happy endings One thing we could all agree on - we all enjoy a well-written romance story with a happy ending!
