Romance Readers Forum:
"Girlfriend Talk: What Women Want & Why They Want It"

We all had a terrific evening at the Romance Readers Forum.  The panelists, Lindsay Longford, Margaret Watson, and Myrna MacKenzie, provided interesting insights and comments regarding romance, reading, and fairy tales.

What Makes A Good Romance Story?

Lindsay Longford commenced the discussion by posing a question to the group.

"We are the people who are buying more than a few books a year. We read many areas of books. When we go to the romance shelf, we say "what do we really want?"

Each of us had the opportunity to share what we really wanted in a good romance story.  Here are some of the comments that were made:

Books that have a bit of mystery to them, but there is always sexual attraction.  The hero and heroine don't always have to consummate the attraction.
Books that will not bore me.
Romance stories must always have a happy ending!
Great dialogue.
The mystery between two people and getting to know each other.
Likes smart women.
Loves sentimentality.

The Fairy Tale

The conversation then veered towards the Fairy Tale and how the heroine is viewed.  Several examples were discussed including "Sleeping Beauty" (the virgin) and "Beauty & The Beast" (implied symbol, i.e., power of the woman to redeem.).  No matter how beastly (Beauty & the Beast, for example) he is, the woman has the power to change him, to bring him within the circle of humankind.

A Evening of Smiles & Pleasant Conversation

Following a lively discussion, we identified four primary elements that make up a great romance story.  These were:

Happy endings
Intelligence of the characters
Sexual tension
Authenticity in the creation of another world

One thing we could all agree on - we all enjoy a well-written romance story with a happy ending!
