In addition, fitted bathtubs would not be a practical option because heated water would have to hauled to the tub. Servants would be required to carry buckets of hot water upstairs, a laborious and time consuming task. It was in the mid 19th century that an overhaul of the water system was done in London which permitted the delivery of water directly to residential areas. Gas lines were also installed which heated the water. The ability to obtain heated water provided the opportunity for fitted bathrooms to be constructed in homes. Enameled, cast-iron bathtubs became a common item in
bathrooms by the 1870s.
