Romantic Tales - Regency

Personal Care: Bathing

The convenience and variety of bathing options in the 21st century surely would have been enviable for individuals living in earlier periods.  Bathing for the men and women of ages past was typically done in a hip bath or a portable bathing tub.  Lengthy heated bathing was not an option when your tub was made of cast iron, tin, or wood.

In addition, fitted bathtubs would not be a practical option because heated water would have to hauled to the tub.  Servants would be required to carry buckets of hot water upstairs, a laborious and time consuming task.

It was in the mid 19th century that an overhaul of the water system was done in London which permitted the delivery of water directly to residential areas.  Gas lines were also installed which heated the water.  The ability to obtain heated water provided the opportunity for fitted bathrooms to be constructed in homes.

Enameled, cast-iron bathtubs became a common item in bathrooms by the 1870s.
