What do you find romantic? Long walks, preferably in the mountains, champagne and roses ... and if that isn't possible, it's romantic when my husband does the laundry and makes dinner. I'll even take that over the champagne (I'm a cheap date). Why do you like reading and writing romance? Because romances celebrate the best things in life: hope, love and healing.
I can fix all my flaws ... ha! No, it's because I can learn from them. Honest! They often surprise me and challenge me. They make me look at myself in new ways. Do your characters write themselves once your book begins? Absolutely! I see a movie in my head and hear voices. I write that first chapter, then sit and think a bit about these people and what they want and need out of life. We confer, the characters and I (they usually win) and I'm off! Sometimes it's hard to keep up. As a newly published author, your first two books, Practice Makes Perfect, (Silhouette Romance 7/03) and Got a Hold on You (Dorchester, 8/03) received 4 stars from Romantic Times. What advice would you give to writers who want to become successfully published? Keep writing no matter what road blocks you hit. Surround yourself with people you can trust who want to help you achieve your dream. Believe in yourself no matter what anyone else says. Oh, and the most important thing is to trust your instincts. What do you think makes a "keeper" novel? A story that you can read over and over again is one that focuses on the
emotional elements of your characters. I've got Judith McNaught's
"Perfect" and Loretta Chase's "Lord of There are other books I keep around to make me smile: Janet Evanovich and Jane Heller books, for instance. Also, I keep certain books on the shelf that amaze me every time I read them. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one. My "keepers" are those that will inspire me in some way.
