Tales - Historical
(Mini-fact)
Origin of the Safety Pin
How
in the world did someone hold pieces of fabric together before the invention of
the safety pin? A form of the safety pin existed as far back as 3,000
years ago in Europe. The sixth century Roman and Greek women used a device
called a "fibula", which served as a pin. A fibula fastened
clothes together very nicely.
The modern safety pin of
today was invented by an American named Walter Hunt in 1849. From little
to large, this small metal device has served mankind well.
