Thought of the Week: October 6, 2002

Principle #1:  Rid yourself of irritants

Irritants are those little things that annoy, bother, and cause minor distress.  Irritants steal your energy reserves by virtue of simply raising your ire.

Unfortunately, no matter where you are along life's journey, there are pebbles of irritants that our feet stumble on when we aren't looking.  These are the mosquitoes that keep buzzing around our head when we sleep at night.

What Is Your Irritant?

It is amazing how many little irritants we have in life that we don't recognize.  We sat down and brainstormed the irritants that periodically get under our skin.  Below are some of the irritants we have faced.  Have you ever had these irritants creep up at the most inconvenient time?

Lock your keys in your car!

You forgot to get gas for your car the night before.  In the morning, it's raining and you're late for work.

Forget an important appointment.

In an emergency, you discover you don't have the proper phone numbers.

Run out to purchase a birthday card at the last minute.

You're hurrying to get dressed and discover you're out of a product, i.e., deodorant or feminine products.  Have you slipped on your last pair of hose only to discover a run?

 Identify & Eliminate

The easiest and most logical way to rid yourself of the little irritants of life is to identify and eliminate them.  As we did above, sit down and make a list of the irritants that steal your energy.  Your next step will be to take corrective action.

Here was the corrective actions we took on our list.

Lock your keys in your car!

Have an extra car key made.  Purchase a metal key holder with a magnetic strip and tuck it beneath your car or keep it in your office drawer.

Forget an important appointment.

If you don't have a small calendar to keep in your purse, purchase one.  Consider keeping a daily list up on the refrigerator.

Run out to purchase a birthday card at the last minute.

When you're at the card or grocery store, pick up an extra card or two.  Keep the cards in your dresser drawer for emergencies.

You forgot to get gas for your car the night before.  In the morning, it's raining and you're late for work.

Never settle in for evening on a 1/4 tank or less of gas.  Swing by the local station first.  You never know if there could be an emergency in the middle of the night!

In an emergency, you discover you don't have the proper phone numbers.

Keep a listing of emergency and family numbers in your wallet or calendar.

You're hurrying to get dressed and discover you're out of a product, i.e., deodorant or feminine products.  Have you slipped on your last pair of hose only to discover a run?

Always have an extra item and when you use it, replace it.  You'll save yourself loads of aggravation.

Goal for the Week!

Make your list of irritants and eliminate them from your life.  You'll feel so much better for doing it, and you'll save energy for the things you enjoy.
