Thought of the Week: October 27, 2002 Principle #4: Learn how to maximize your time
What can you do to maximize the 24 hours you are given each day? Here are some ideas you might want to try. Suggestion #1: Run errands efficiently How many times do you go to the grocery store every week? Make a list of everything you need and try to visit the grocery store only once a week! You will be amazed at the time you will save in travel and aggravation. In addition, try to group your errands into a single time allocation. If you have to visit the library, drop the kids off at an after school function, and do three other errands, organize your stops so no one place is out of the way. Can you do some errands at off-peak hours? The best time to visit the grocery store or run errands is mid-morning and/or early in the week. Thursday, Friday, and weekends tend to be the busiest days for shopping and errand running. Suggestion #2: Learn to say "No" Learning to say "no" can be extremely difficult, particularly if you are a giving and helpful person. Admit to yourself how much you can handle, prioritize, and just say "no." Truly, there are situations where you have no choice but to participate, but be choosy! There comes a point when you must think about yourself and your family. Spreading yourself in too many directions will only diminish your ability to succeed in your projects. Suggestion #3: Cut down the television time! The first place you may gravitate to is the television at the end of your busy day. Consider filling the time with other activity, even if it is sitting at the table with a cup of tea and thumbing through a magazine. Take the opportunity to work on your family photo albums, read a book, or visit with a friend on the phone. If you enjoy watching a favorite sitcom, movie, or educational program, learn how to use the VCR! You can watch a program and fast forward through the commercials. You can save approximately ten minutes of your time zipping through commercials on a 30 minute sitcom. Goal for the Week! Begin thinking about how you can maximize your time every day. Five minutes here and ten minutes there add up. When you maximize your time, you can benefit from the extra time to do things you enjoy.
