Thought of the Week: November 17, 2002

Principle #7: Be selective with your decorations!

One of the joys of a holiday are the decorations.  Thanksgiving provides the opportunity to display everything from pumpkins, ceramic figurines, fall colored leaves to paper pilgrims hanging on the door.

Christmas decorations can be dazzling to old-fashioned.  Ornaments, Santa Claus, lights, and a myriad of "things" from candles to a Nativity scene can be put out for display.

If you are one of those people who tingles with the excitement of decorating but finds the process tiring, we have a couple of suggestions for you to try.

Bqa50048.jpg (88709 bytes)Watch Out for the Lure of the Sale

The problem that many of us run into is the collection of "things."  No one can deny the lure of a beautifully designed stocking or collectible, particularly if it's a "steal of a deal" at the end of the Season.

Although it will be difficult at first, take the stance of being selective with any purchases.  Just because a decoration is inexpensive doesn't mean it should be purchased.  Keep in mind that for every item you buy, you add one "thing" to the boxes of Christmas or Thanksgiving decor.

Be selective with your decoration purchases.

The Tree

Tree decorating can be a lot of fun, particularly with young children.  If, however, you find tree decorating a challenging or tiring project, don't feel guilty.  You do have options.

Consider purchasing a small table size tree.  (Depending onBqa50051.jpg (84219 bytes) your situation, you can buy a "real" or artificial tree).  Decorate the branches with small bows, lights, or mini-ornaments.  One doesn't need a 6-footer to relish the beauty of a tree.  It's important to have a tree, no matter how large or small.

Less Can Be More

Keep in mind that you don't need to put up a vast quantity of decorations to appreciate the holiday.  If you genuinely embrace the experience of decorating, we encourage you to do it.  If you secretly find decorating a challenge, less can be more.  Select a few of your favorites and put them out for viewing.

It is important to maintain the focus of the holiday.  It's not just about the decorations, presents, and gift cards.  The holidays are about friendships, family, and new beginnings.

Goal for the Week!

When you pull out of the holiday decoration boxes this year, consider tossing out some of the decorations.  Are any of the Christmas balls cracked or lackluster?  Do you have decorations that you really don't like, but keep at the bottom of the box.  This can be a tough job, but you'll be glad you took the time to do it!
