People You Should Know
My Son, the Use
of a Poem
by Rosemary Halawa
© 2004 Rosemary Halawa
A poem will not feed the hungry
Shelter the poor
Dress the naked
Or heal the wounded
A poem will not put coins in your pockets
No! no! it won't do that
A poem will fill your mind with rare thoughts
That like perfume can be smelled
By those who come into contact with you
A poem will fill your mind with dreams
And your heart with courage
To find your mission,
walk to your destiny
and know your purpose in life
A poem is having wings in your feet
So your journey may be light and pleasant
A poem is a seed that grows roots in your soul
If is nectar that feeds the tree trunk and makes you strong
It is fragile flowers that renew your hopes daily
It is delicious fruit that you
And you alone can harvest
All throughout your life
A poem will not cover your bare necessities
but will soften your daily struggle
Because a poem - my son-
is a luxury of the very, very few.
