Photo Study: Photography as Art and Story

Melissa Hamilton

Photography can be a form of expression, a venue for recording experiences, or simply the enjoyment of capturing a moment of beauty.  I appreciate the camera as a unique tool because it becomes an extension of what I'm seeing and feeling.  The emotional and intellectual can instantly become tangible once that little button is pressed.

Some photographers favor certain subjects.  I particularly enjoy nature and people.  I hope that you enjoy the photos I have selected to share.  May these inspire you to pick up a camera and view the world through new eyes.

Further Thoughts on Photography

Settler Park Lake.JPG (57012 bytes)Fall on Fall
Fall is my favorite season.  Illinois provides so many lovely places to enjoy the beauty of nature.  An outing to Settlers' Park in Plainfield, Illinois gave me the chance to experiment in "layering" details.

Memorial Day is a time of family, picnics, and parades.  It is also a special opportunity to reflect upon the men and women who have come before.  In particular, those individuals who have served their country in a period of war.

When taking photos at historical or memorial events, keep your eyes focused to the detail.  It is in the detail, that the most interesting stories are revealed.

Evidence of Spring 2 Morton Arboretum.jpg (38016 bytes)Nature's Colors
I love color.  Nature has given us the gift of a myriad of shades, tones, and textures.  With the camera, we can capture the dimensions of color in an eternal moment.

Naperville_Cemetary_II.jpg (31104 bytes)Stone Reveals a Story
I have always found cemeteries fascinating from both a human experience and as a connection to the past.  The Naperville Cemetery located on Washington Street has been the final resting place for generations of Naperville citizens.  The names of early settlers, infants, Civil War soldiers, grandmothers, and men in their prime rest beneath the trees that have watched the decades roll by.

You would be surprised of the many beauties that literally are just beyond your doorstep.  In fact, upon close inspection, you could spend quite a long time wandering about your backyard.

Grand Canyon 3.jpg (78428 bytes)The Grand Canyon
The one drawback to photography is that sometimes it simply can not capture the subject.  The Grand Canyon is one such subject.  One of the joys of viewing the canyon was observing the movement of clouds, which created living shadows.

The Playground
One truth that I have learned since picking up my first manual 35mm camera is this:  you see a different world from behind a lens.  That truth brought made particularly clear when I visited a playground.  Observe the unseen.  Notice the obvious. It is in these that the best photographs are born.

Bench with Pail.JPG (65082 bytes)The Playground II
Over the Memorial Day weekend (2005), I had the opportunity to visit Volo, Illinois.  Part of the entertainment provided by the place we stayed were its playgrounds.  I never would have thought that playgrounds would be such an interesting subject to photograph.

Winter: Backyard Window
On this particular morning (around 8:00 a.m.), the first real snow fall of the winter had finished.  The subjects in these photos are literally just outside my back window.  With my nose and camera to the windowpane, I snapped my shots.  Once again, study in the detail is observed.

Sunset 1.JPG (20865 bytes)Winter Sunset - Plainfield, Illinois
Most of the time we are too busy to stop and enjoy a sunset.  Of course, we enjoy a view when on vacation, particularly if holidaying in a tropical paradise.  I was reminded that we don't need to go out of town to enjoy the beauty of nature.  Spectacular sunsets are just over our shoulder.

Summer is Coming.JPG (67104 bytes)Wisconsin - Sky & Rolling Hills
On a recent road trip to northwestern Wisconsin (May 2005), I was humbled by the ever changing sky and lovely countryside.
