Mature Couples

Viewing photographs of mature couples invite a dozen speculations about what they had experienced throughout their life together.  How did they meet?  What dreams did they share when they were first married?  What did they discuss in those rare moments when hard work and responsibility was put aside?  Did they have children?  Where did they spend their last years together?

We don't know their individual stories, but their daily hopes and aspirations were likely the same as ours.  

This is a lovely photograph as it shows a rustic backdrop behind the couple.  It is as though the man and woman are taking in the surroundings of a nearby park. The gentleman's wife is seated on a bench that compliments the rustic backdrop.   

Make sure and take note of the man's watch fob. The "fob" was a short chain attached to a watch and worn hanging from the pocket.

Can you imagine the stories this couple could share?  The photograph was taken in Minnesota.  To the 21st century generation, the American Civil War is history.  To this couple, the American Civil War was a contemporary event.

If you look closely, you can see the man's bow tie peaking from beneath his long, soft white beard.

The benefit of black and white photographs is the viewer's ability to see the details.  In the original photograph, we can see that the woman is wearing small hoop earrings and a rectangular pin at base of her collar.  The first physical characteristic we noticed was her long fingers.  A simple wedding band graces her left hand.

The name of the woman seated in the photograph is Mildred.  Take note of the long chain she wears about her neck.  Notice the puffed capped sleeves and tucks on the bodice of her dress.  Imagine how her long white hair must have looking trailing past her shoulders like a shawl.

The man's firm nose and square jaw is strengthened by the neatly cut beard.  His hair is thick and brushed with wisps of gray.  We wondered what the couple did after the photograph was taken.  Did they spend an afternoon with family?
