Lynna Banning - Music

lynnabanning.JPG (19580 bytes)Long before I began to write I studied piano (classical), and in mid-life discovered the recorder and the world of Early Music, in particular music of the medieval period.

I play with two early music ensembles, and took up the harp and psaltery to "expand" our capabilities. The medieval ensemble has presented four formal concerts (which scare me to death!), and while I am now struggling with beyond-beginner harp technique, it is fun and challenging to "work up" a piece of medieval music. Most such music is just a single-line melody, so the ensemble has to think up ways to make it interesting–accompaniments, percussion, created harmonies, maybe a sung verse, etc. Along the way, I took some workshops in early medieval dance.

About the harpsichord: with a background in piano I was interested in exploring early keyboard music; my husband built me a beautiful harpsichord (shiny black with a scarlet interior) and I started taking lessons (the touch/technique is very different from piano). It’s fun to play Scarlatti or Couperin on the instrument they would have used; it’s also fun (and challenging) to "play continuo" for (accompany) the works of baroque composers (Telemann, Bach).

Around the time I began to write fiction (1993), I also expanded into these other musical areas. I started writing my first (historical) novel as a lark, and got hooked. Same thing for music–once you fall in love with it, you’re a goner.
