The Writing Craft/Love is Murder Mystery Conference

What three things do you find most exciting about the conference?

LIM will be so jam-packed with fun, entertainment, and knowledge sharing it is hard to just pick three things that I am looking forward to, but I'll try:

Chicago Love is Murder Mystery Conference.JPG (42442 bytes)First, we are honored to be hosting Walter Mosley as our keynote speaker and personally, he has been one of my favorite authors since his first Easy Rawlins mystery, Devil in a Blue Dress.   Up until that book, the mystery scene was pretty homogenous, at least for me.  I had never "met" a character like Easy before and it was thrilling to learn about him, the details of his life, his friends and resulting intrigue, all set in 1950s Los Angeles.

Just as Sara Paretzsky broke the gender barrier of mysteries with V. I., Walter Mosley tore down the racial divide with Easy, an African-American man, who was smart enough to know the system, but clever enough to either work with it or around it if necessary.  I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Hanley Kanar, the genius behind our conference programming, who was gutsy and tenacious enough to book Mr. Mosley.

Secondly, I am really excited about the expansion of genres to include dark fiction and romance at our conference.  There is so much crossing over now that while it may be a publisher's nightmare to classify various writers these days, it is an exciting time for readers.  We have so many more opportunities to discover new authors that were once considered outside our interest areas.  The resulting work is even richer due to that intertwining of genres.

Last but not least, I have been enjoying the freedom that working independently can bring.  While the conference had been embedded within educational institutions previously, and it certainly benefited from their many resources, we have been able to try new formats, processes, and relationships outside the usual organizational purviews. And I believe the final results will be outstanding - our best year ever.

For writers who have never attended the conference, what happens at the panel discussions and Q&A with authors? What types of topics are discussed?

For new attendees, they can expect the following:

-a great value for their dollars. LIM is the only conference of its type that has so much to offer for so little money.  The participants will receive all their meals as part of the tuition price (except for the Saturday afternoon tea which can be enjoyed for an additional, nominal cost.)

-unlike some other similar events, each panel has multiple presenters as opposed to just one or two individuals.  This gives attendees the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives and learn about many varied experiences.  Also, with the first-time author panels, it provides a chance to expand one's reading repertoire and to get their feet wet in the art of conference participation.

Each panel will have a moderator to help direct the flow of pre-established questions and ensure that every panel participant gets a chance to speak.  LIM has three distinct tracks that should appeal to everyone. The first is the "how-to" track- how to write short stories, sex scenes (very tricky!), children's  books, screen plays, etc.. The second is our academic side-Love is Murder Mystery Conference Chicago State Street.JPG (66653 bytes) popular with librarians and teachers. Topics in the past have included murder in great literature, comparing British and American mysteries, or a discussion on Hannibal Lechter as friend and foe. Finally, the third is our entertainment track. This is the fun stuff-people get to meet FBI profilers, Chicago cops, surveillance pros-in other words, individuals whose daily routines are so different from our own, providing a glimpse into the grittier side of life.

The Q & A scheduled at the end of each panel should last about 15 minutes. If attendees plan on which panels to attend now, they can also be thinking of what questions they'd like to have answered by people who know!

Most sessions will last about an hour (although a few meatier topics will be longer) and are scheduled on the hour. Although four to five panels will be going on simultaneously, attendees need not worry about missing a thing, as video CD's will be available for sale of all the sessions.
