Author Booksignings Laura Renken
You can read a past interview with Laura in our Romance Authors Archive category at Laura Renken!
Guests had the opportunity to visit with Laura before the formal booksigning commenced. Everything from the latest novel being read to politics was discussed. Maureen Greene had to intercede in order to start the program. What a great time we were having, and the event hadn't event started! "The Muse"
Laura provided an interesting presentation discussing the "muse" in all of us, particularly writers. Laura said that our muse is "the voice in your head" and it is this that spurs the imagination to create the characters of a story. "Everyone has their own separate way they find their story." Laura took time to share how her muse works. She said that she works better with spontaneity in her writing, that she "can not pull it up at will" because the "characters write the story." Laura reflected on how a
"spark" triggered the first character in her book "Autumn
Star" (aka Lori Morgan, Leisure Books, 2001). She had just returned
from the library and "the characters began Maureen Greene introduced Laura to guests. We captured a moment of humor, and everyone got a good chuckle!
Laura mentioned to the group that she is excited about the new area of history she is exploring - the Victorians. In an upcoming series of historical romance novels, Laura will be bringing her stories of adventure and passion within the Victorian Age as a backdrop. As Laura had delved into her research for the new series, she marveled at the conveniences that were available to the Victorians compared to their 17th and 18th century ancestors. Historical facts are critically important in weaving stories in a historical context. A writer can not have 19th century technology in a 18th century story. Laura also mentioned that she thoroughly enjoys the time periods she writes in when creating a story. When out in the West, she adores the West, for example. Laura told us that she "completely immerses myself in the period and the research." When Laura Knew She Wanted to Write Laura shared a special experience with her guests. Her 21 year daughter had asked her the question, "when did you decide you wanted to be a writer?" This query induced Laura to consider why she had chosen a career in writing. May 13, 1978 was a pivotal day in the life of Laura Renken. She shared that "after I read, "The Flame & the Flower," by Kathleen Woodiwiss, it was at that moment I said I wanted to write love stories." Considering that Laura had received the love of history from her grandfather, her interest in writing historical romance is understandable. Thank goodness Laura followed her dream!
