Karin Spritzler Contact Karin at: spritzler@aol.com We invited Karin Spritzler, a talented artist of numerous areas, to take a moment to talk about her work. Her popular "Wedding Plays" are a poetic narrative that tells the story of a couple's romance, which is shared at the wedding event. In addition, she has fused the mediums of language and painting via putting words onto real dried lotus leaves. Enjoy! ________________________________
Karin Spritzler’s work as a playwright has always been the human heart. As a playwright and writing instructor, Karin developed her finely tuned skills in story-telling as a script analyst for major television and film studios. Many years’ work, and reading over 2,000 screenplays, has finely tuned her instincts and insights. Believing in the healing power of words, Karin teaches creative writing to many groups whose own voices are rich, yet are silenced in various ways: e.g. homeless women with mental illness, patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, at-risk teens. In this deeply felt work, she has keenly understood that everyone has a story. "Wedding Bard" is a culmination of her never-ending love of people, life, romance, tradition…and live theatre!
Before there was all the fancy "tech" stuff –
videographers, camcorders, music videos, etc. weddings were simply about the
It is my invention, and what I call "poetic narrative." Each play is a combination of telling the "outer story" ( how the couple met) - and most importantly, telling the "inner story" ( why they met). Friends and family read the "voices" which tell these stories. Each play is different, unique, and reflects the personalities of the couple. Some are pure fun and entertainment, others are more deeply poetic and resonate on a symbolic level. All are a combination of both. The "Wedding Play" is read as part of the ceremony and often becomes very much a part of the vows – as it is the portrait of the promise made from these two special people, on this very special day. It is also a beautiful way for the couple to savor their love, and to share it with those gathered. A wedding is a wonderful opportunity to have your love be an inspiration to others. Letting people know what love can bring, bring out, and sharing it-- is what life is all about ! The "Wedding Play" is then preserved in a beautiful hand-made book, to be savored and honored – and read again and again. Even by great-great-grandchildren!.
The answer to this is simple. I am a true romantic. And I believe love makes the world a better place. And everyone should be in love, and everyone should inspire others to be! Ah, what a world we’d have…
I feel honored and privileged at being a witness to a couple’s love. Every love story is unique. And every one inspires me. As a writer, it is gratifying to put into words and poetry, what often times, a person cannot express.
I have always loved painting on anything that is "organic"—hand made papers, old wood, rusty tin found in an alley, etc.! And now, I have discovered painting and putting words onto real dried lotus leaves! I love the fact that I am taking something from nature and "savoring" it. And I love the shape of the leaf, which many think of as "fans." I have found that a rounded shape creates a profound "space of beauty"-- which we really need as humans. Most of what surrounds us ( take a look) is "right angles." Nature is not created like this, and even placing a "fan" shape in a room, changes it.
Since I love words, I choose my favorite quotes and poems, and yes, some of my own words—and calligraph them onto the leaves. Adding an special image is another way of celebrating "love" for me. Also, the Lotus Flower, is a traditional spiritual symbol of life’s unquenchable force—as its beautiful flower grows out of only a shallow puddle of mud. The romantic part of me loves to "personalize" the lotus leaves: you choose the words and the image. Let me create it for you! And yes, I have made some for weddings!
