The Swing was displayed at the third Impressionist exhibition. Some of the critics felt the "dappled surface of the painting was 'audacious.'"
Madame Georges Charpentier was the wife of one of Renoir's early patrons, Georges Charpentier. The publisher (Charpentier) purchased three of Renoir's paintings in 1875. As Renoir's patron, he commissioned several works which helped keep food on the table.
This painting is of Madame Charpentier and her children which was displayed at the Salon in 1879. Renoir stumbled upon good fortune when he met the Charpentiers. Madame Charpentier used her connections to ensure her portrait was well displayed at the Salon.
