Photo Study: Photography as Art and Story

Melissa Hamilton

"Further Thoughts on Photography"

Photography is an art medium that truly provides a boundless canvas of subject matter.  The photographer is only limited by the restrictions he places upon himself.

From the moment I snapped my first photograph using a Pentax K-1000, I was hooked.  Although I have incorporated digital technology into my inventory, I still use my old manual camera for exertions.  I like pulling out the telephoto lens and bringing the action up close and personal.

The Seen & Unseen

As many photographers would likely tell you, peering from behind the eyes of the camera, the perspective of the world changes.  I see colors, an image, a truth that is only visible within the framework of a photograph.  Everything outside that focus is superfluous.

Although I enjoy nearly every subject matter, I favor people and nature.  The variety of faces and activity captured in a split second tells a story.  Taking photographs of individuals in context (situation and/or environment) is always a fascinating adventure.  Nature, on the other hand, is both simple and complex.  Nature provides richness in shape, color, and texture.

Photography - A Door to Open

Photography opens the door to endless creativity.  My current project has involved discovering the picture within a larger landscape.  Specifically, focusing in on the obvious that goes unseen. The first series of photographs on this project were those taken at a local playground.  You can view these photos at The Playground.
