"You listen to me you spineless idiot," the deep voice hissed. "If you even think you can back out of this deal, you better reconsider." "But…" the other male voice squeaked. "Just shut up," the man snapped. "We’ve got too much riding on this and the people we’re working for won’t be as nice as I am." Lena flinched at the harsh statement as though she had been struck. This was no boss scolding an employee. "He knows what we're doing." The other man’s tone was laced with threads of panic. "I’m telling you, he knows. I told you he was too smart." "He can’t prove a thing." "I’m supposed to meet with him tomorrow morning. What am I going to tell him?" "Nothing," the deep voice said. "Tell him you don’t know what he’s talking about." "He won't believe me." "Just do as you’re told. You let me do the thinking." Lena moistened her dry lips with the edge of her tongue. Who were these two men discussing? They had to be employees of NST Technology. She was on the executive floor after all. Did the deal have something to do with the company? The man with the panic stricken voice spoke again. "What are we going to do when he gets the evidence?" The deep voice paused before speaking. "After he gets the balance of the funding, we’ll eliminate him." Covering her hand over her mouth, she swallowed a gasp. The men had to be talking about Gage McCotter. The magazine articles had mentioned he was seeking investor capital for some new research project. A battle of conscience waged inside her head. She should tell McCotter what she had overheard. It was the right thing to do. Warning him would also provide her the perfect opening to an introduction. Lena quietly inhaled a shaky breath and made up her mind. Only one obstacle would keep him from believing her fantastic story.
