The Modern Renaissance Woman

Finding Your Fashion

Fashion has been a point of interest to women for hundreds of years. Each generation has its own style from ball gowns of the Victorian period, the 1950s poodle skirt, to jeans, T-shirts, and designer purses of our generation.

The challenge for today's Modern Renaissance Woman is differentiating herself from the pack.  Since particular fashion styles for a season infiltrates every major department store to boutiques, it takes a dash of creativity and modicum of determination to create your own unique image.

Certainly, it can be fun to select an item or two that is the rage of the season.  However, at the heart, the Modern Renaissance Woman wants to define her own style as it applies to fashion. Consider below the 7-Steps to Finding your Own Fashion.  Once your have identified the image you want to exhibit, your shopping experience and end result will be vastly enriched!

Step 1:  Find a style that defines you!

Fad fashion comes and goes, but style never does.  This first step requires you to be honest with yourself.  Have you consciously Find your Fashion Woman's Business Suit.JPG (21979 bytes)chosen a style that fits the image you want to present to the world?  Do you feel confident?  Are you physically comfortable in what you wear? (Nothing is worse than sore feet, tight waistbands, etc.).

What matters for the Modern Renaissance Woman is that she determines a style of fashion that works for her image, despite the "what's in this season" perspective.  No matter your profession or station (home-working mom, retired lady, or business professional), it's important to define your own unique style.

Step 2:  Create "image tags" that identifies your styleFind your Fashion Jewelry.JPG (26958 bytes)

Whatever style defines you, consider identifying fashion elements that are associated with you.  An example would be jewelry.  I am a great fan of jewelry, which I inherited from my grandmother.  I like choosing unique pieces, artsy pieces, and employing variety in my selections.  People who know me always associate jewelry as one of my image tags.

Find your Fashion Purse.JPG (39963 bytes)Other elements can be used as your image tag.  An associate I know has gorgeous waist length blond (natural) hair.  Such an asset is unique as many women cut their hair to shorter styles today.  Other image tags can be used such as scarves, shoes, handbags (antique), color, etc.

The point is to identify a fashion asset that compliments your style and can be associated just with you!

Step 3:  Look to tradition for inspiration

It is true to say that there is nothing new under the sun.  As the years pass, fashions are always repeated in some application.  (Ponchos, slides, and pointy shoe pumps are great examples).  However, there are some fashion traditions that can inspire and be a special asset to your image.

Reflecting on past fashion allows you to add that unique flavor to your own style.

One fashion instrument of the past that I have incorporated is the decorative fan.  Fashionable ladies of the Victorian period usedFan and fashion.JPG (67050 bytes) a fan for many reasons in addition to its primary use - to keep cool.  Fans can be elegant yet practical even for the 21st century woman.  In lieu of grabbing a piece of paper or enduring the heat, carry a fan in your purse for those warm moments.

For those ladies entering the menopause years, a fan is the way to go!  You can still carry off fashion with aplomb while burning up from the inside out!

Step 4:  Class and sophistication are NEVER out of style

An important consideration for the Modern Renaissance Woman is maintaining a sense of class and sophistication in your style.  No matter your station or situation in life, a woman can always exhibit class.

A list of dos and don'ts could be provided, but we all remember what our grandmother's generation taught.  Unfortunately, 21st century society has watered down the finer sensibilities in many respects.  In lieu of a lengthy list, here are several recommendations that NEVER go out of style

Show respect to others

DON'T chew gum - it just plain looks bad!

Saying "Thank you" is always appropriate

Swearing sprinkled into everyday language - it just plain sounds bad!

Step 5:  Black is fabulous, but add a dash of color

Confession is good for the soul; I like wearing black.  However, I do love vibrant colors.  Black can be sophisticated, easy to wear, and, as my mother always says, "hides a multitude of sins."  Yet to bring variety to your fashion, it's good to step outside the box.

Incorporate color into your wardrobe.  Splash a colorful scarf over your shoulders, wear jacket in a rich shade of emerald green, or whatever color works for you.  The next time you are scheduled to attend a dress up event, be different from the other ladies and stand out wearing color!

Step 6:  Don't put off what you can wear today!

Unlike putting money away for a rainy day, don't apply the lesson to your favorite fashions.  Living for moment should always apply to clothes.  We are never promised tomorrow, only today.  So, enjoy your best this week.  The lovely sweater, the perfect dress, the fun shoes - wear them now!  Your favorites won't do you any good in a back corner of the closet.

Step 7:  Incorporate other culture fashions

Have you considered incorporating other culture fashions into your style?  In a world of multiple cultures, it's easy to add an item here and there to make your fashion style more interesting.

Everything from head pieces, jewelry, clothes, shoes, etc. can be seamlessly made a part of your unique style.  What better way to learn about other cultures than exposing your fashion intellect to their unique styles.

Closing Comments

The exciting challenge for the Modern Renaissance Woman is to identify a style that suits her personality and interests.  It is also the opportunity for her to feel comfortable and confident no matter her age or size.  What is most important is knowing yourself and creating the image that shows the world who you are inside.
