Photo Study: Photography as Art and Story

"Fall on Fall"

Melissa Settler Park Plainfield.JPG (62468 bytes)Fall is my favorite season.  The colors run from rich reds to earthy browns.  I had the good fortune of visiting a lovely park located in Plainfield, Illinois.  The park, Settlers' Park, was the perfect locale to revel in the glories of fall.  Of course, the weather was beyond spectacular!

The photos were taken about 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon.  As photographers may appreciate, early morning or late afternoon light is the best.  However, in some cases the sun was at my back which made the blue sky literally pop in some of the photos!

Overall, I view these photos as "layering" details.  As you will see, each photo contains a variety of elements, i.e., color contrasts, lines, shapes, texture, etc.  The fall season provides the perfect backdrop for these types of photos.

Settler Park Entrance.JPG (55188 bytes)This lovely entrance way invites visitors to the park.  The design and layout of the park is particularly conducive to the photographer.  Stone, leading lines, shadows, and varied textures created the perfect environment for exercising the artist's eye.

(Notice that blue, blue sky.  No Photoshop tricks, here!)

Grass thru fence.JPG (59969 bytes)This photo is packed full of marvelous elements. Although the rod iron fence dominates, it also becomes a secondary subject. (Notice the reflection of the bars in the sidewalk.)

I particularly liked the delicate grass spearing through the opening of the fence - such a contrast in texture and color.

Settle Park Bridge.JPG (66163 bytes)The bridge extended over the Settlers' Park lake.  Again, these wonderful leading lines and symbiotic  shadows.  Also, the variety of shapes is readily apparent.  Here is another feature to catch the eye - notice the varying shades of cremes, grays, and tans of the wood surface of the bridge.  (I could go on, but you see what I mean...).

Melissa Image in Grass.JPG (66321 bytes)I was just having a fun with this photo.  The sun was so powerful, my shadow cast its image into the grass.  If you look carefully, vivid shades of burgundy and green blend beyond the grass.  Again, I enjoy layering details in photos.

Shadow of Tree.JPG (40892 bytes)I like this photo because of its simplicity.  A young tree stands tall and gives a strong shadow.
