Develop Your Personal Quotation Library

The power of the written word can never be underestimated.  Iwpe15.gif (10865 bytes) can not count the times I have reached for a book of quotations from my bookshelf.  I find quotations, proverbs, and interesting sayings a marvelous balm no matter my mood.

I have collected a marvelous selection of books over the years that have proved invaluable to me.  The words on these pages are motivating, thought-provoking, and at times simply a pleasure to read when I need a break.

I have discovered at least three benefits of reading words written in a quotation format.

Convenient & Quick.  I adore the convenience of perusing quotations.  Chapters are typically divided by subject, i.e., attitude, faith, friendship, etc.  Within a few moments, you can be inspired or soothed.

A Shared Experience.  If you think about it, quotations are a shared experience.  The writer shares her thoughts with you.  In turn, you can share the quotation with someone else.

Writing & Speaking.  Whether writing a letter, article, or giving a toast at an event, an appropriate quotation is always appreciated.  I particularly enjoy including a quotation in a speech.  Packed messages are conveyed in an economy of words.

Building Your Quotation Library

As I mentioned, I have collected a wide range of quotation books over the years.  Some of the most precious books are those that belonged to my father.  If you do not have a collection of quotations, I recommend that you consider developing a personalized quotation library that suits your needs and interest.

Since I adore books, I have purchased several for my bookshelf to accompany those that I have had for years.  Periodically, stop in your local bookstore and browse.  I find lunchtime a convenient time to visit the bookstore.

Purchase books.  Check out the "sale" or "gift" sections of the bookstore.  You can find some great hardback quotation books for a variety of occasions and topics.

Here is an example of some of my special quotation books residing on my bookshelf--

Five Thousand Quotations for All Occasions, edited by Lewis C. Henry, Doubleday & Co., 1945 This book is a real treasure as it belonged to my father.  It brings together a rich selection of interesting quotations covering everything from "Ability" to "Zeal".
Familiar Quotations, John Bartlett, Little, Brown & Company, 1955 Another book that belonged to my father.  The book on my shelf is the 13th edition, undoubtedly updated in the last 48 years!
Popular Proverbs & Sayings, Gregory Y. Titelman, Random House, 1996 A gift from my mother in 1996 for my birthday.
Treasury of Women's Quotations, Prentice Hall (Simon & Schuster), Carolyn Warner, 1992 (ISBN: 0-13-641689-6) This has been a terrific book.  All the quotations are written by women on a wide range of topics.  I discovered this treasure in the "sale" section of the bookstore. (When I visit the bookstore, my first stop is always the "sales" table).

I have discovered that incorporating quotations into my periodic reading repertoire has been greatly beneficial to me.  In addition to expanding my experience, the words of others bring me encouragement and serenity.

As a Modern Renaissance Woman, reach out and enjoy the satisfaction that quotations can afford you.

"An effort made for the happiness of others lifts above ourselves."
