Share some descriptive comments regarding the countryside near Floors Castle. Floors Castle is on the edge of the pretty cobbled square town of Kelso. It commands spectacular views over the Cheviot Hills and the River Tweed which is famous for some of the best salmon fishing in Britain. The Duke owns over 50,000 acres of surrounding land most of which is tenanted to farmers. The main form of farming is arable the staple being potatoes, wheat, barley and rape. There is also sheep and cattle farming, the area being renowned for Aberdeen Angus beef which visitors can sample in local restaurants. The Borders has a rich history with many beautiful Abbeys scattered throughout and many stately old homes, Georgean and Victorian plus the William Wallace monument which is certainly worth seeing. Near the monument is "Scotts View" which was Sir Walter Scott's favourite view and when you see it you'll know why!The countryside is very different to the north of Scotland. It is full of soft rolling hills with scenic roads flanked by hedgerows with the landscape a patchwork of crops and grazing land with an abundance of deciduous trees everywhere, making this landscape beautiful at any time of the year directly reflecting each season.Floors Castle offers a wide range of activities. You mention one event on your website: "Highland Games." Is this an annual event? What games/activities occur at the "Highland Games?" The Highland games mentioned on the website is an activity involving tossing the caber (a big tree trunk) throwing a ball and chain etc. We can organise for pre booked groups - it is not something we do a lot of as we are "lowlanders" in the Borders. So not something we would really highlight. For visitors who have never been to Floors Castle, do you have any recommendations for making their visit more enjoyable? For new visitors to Floors, seeing inside the castle is an obvious must and to speak to the guides which are in every room as they are full of fun stories and information about the castle and family history. Also not to miss is exploring the grounds and gardens. There are many parts to the gardens to discover. Walking from the castle across the massive front lawns you can wander through the Star Plantation Woodland (particularly beautiful in the spring with masses of bulbs). This brings you to the Millennium Parterre which was built by the current Duke and Duchess, designed in traditional French style. Here is where you'll discover the little stone garden cottage where Queen took afternoon tea on her visit in Beyond the Parterre is the Walled Gardens. This definitely is not to be missed. It is one of the last few traditional walled gardens still in operation in Britain. The stoned fruit glass houses, soft fruits cages and vegetable gardens all supply the castle kitchen and the plants and flowers for the castle rooms, all meticulously kept by Head Gardener Billy Crozier and his team.
