Comments by Susan Elizabeth
Phillips
I would like to begin this phase of the review of "Heaven, Texas" by telling you that Susan Elizabeth Phillips has a wonderful sense of humor and sensitivity which gives her readers a feeling of friendship and pleasure while getting to know her characters. In all of her novels, I haven’t met one character that I wouldn’t enjoy spending an evening having dinner and chatting over a glass of wine with him or her. My first question to Ms. Phillips was regarding the beginning of the "Chicago Stars" series and whether or not she had a plan for the hero and heroine of each book. Her response was that not only did she not have a plan for a hero and heroine of each book, but she didn’t even plan to write a series. She said that while writing "It Had To Be You," she fell in love with Bobby Tom Denton and just couldn’t let him go when it was done. Phillips mentioned that the same sort of thing happened when she wrote "Nobody’s Baby But Mine" (the third book in the series). She became extremely curious about the "televangelist’s wife," had to learn more about her and consequently, wrote "Dream A Little Dream." Secondly, I shared with Phillips that I had read all the books in the series and that I am a sports fan. Phillips amazed me at her ability to understand the personalities and egos of "larger than life" sports stars. I was curious how she acquired that knowledge and understanding and asked her to share some thoughts on it. Phillips admitted that she isn’t much of a sports fan and even had to ask her husband who was playing in this year’s Super Bowl. She said she was always curious about the business of football and enjoys certain books about sports. She stated that she began writing "It Had To Be You," not because she wanted to write about football, but because she wanted to put a hapless heroine (Phoebe Somerville) into a totally male environment and let her thrive. As I read the description of BT’s face, hair, etc., it reminded me of Troy Aikman, who played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 2000. I wondered if that was her intent or if it just happened that way. Phillips stated that it wasn’t her intent but that Aikman was playing football during the time she wrote it and since BT was from Texas, it seemed obvious to her that they would know each other. At this point, Phillips threw in a little side comment for us. She mentioned an old episode of "Coach" where Hayden Fox learns he had a low sperm count and decides he wants Troy Aikman as the sperm donor for his baby with Christine? A Classic!! The following lists all the books in Phillips’ "Chicago Stars" series.
