The primary purpose of the castle was for defense.  To make a permanent stronghold, the castle had to be constructed of stone.  If the local area did not have the stone available on-site, the rich lord had to have the stone imported.  Of course, not all 12th century castles took on the "Norman keep" appearance, but had on their own design.

The walls of the castle consisted of three layers of materials:

Layer One:  rough stone which made the inner shell
Layer Two: a wide filling of flint and rubble
Layer Three: strong outer casing of stone called "ashlar"
