I started out as a beaded jewelry shop. Beadwork takes a lot of time, and when I received word that I had been accepted, I had less then 2 months before the Bristol Renaissance Faire opened. I needed to fill the empty wall space. The friend, who I sold beadwork to, suggested putting some plain white fans on the walls to fill in the empty spaces. The first weekend was very hot and a court member came into the shop, as most
court members enjoy looking at the new shops, and wanted us to put colored
feathers on a fan to match her gown. I said that I would try my best to match
her gown. A few hours later another court member came in with the same request.
The next weekend, they were very happy and by end of that weekend more court
members had asked us to do the same for them. Notice this lady has tied her fan to her
belt. Again, a lady's fan is at the ready when needed. I started decorating a few fans, and it just started to grow. I then tried to do some ostrich feather and period fans of the 16th century, the time period the Bristol Renaissance Faire is portraying. Other feather products got started by people asking us to create something special for them. In addition to your web site (www.geocities.com/fanladycynthia), where do you display your work? Though our website is our year round catalog, we have shops at the Bristol Renaissance Faire, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and the Texas Renaissance Festival. We have a friend that does the Society for Creative Anachronism, (SCA) events and sells our fans there. What do you enjoy most about being an artist? I enjoy creating pretty things. I love to see someone fall in love with my creations and appreciate the time and beauty that went into their creation. I put love and care into every piece or item I make. I enjoy doing something I love to do. People finally appreciate that I am an artist. My 7-8th grade art teacher was never impressed with my creations. I saw him the other day and he recognized me as one of his former students. I reminded him that I was the student he thought wouldn't make it as an artist and guess what? I'm an artist now! He smiled. You can do whatever you want to do-just believe in yourself. One of Krystyna's joys as an artist is enhancing a person's natural beauty. She can bring out the beauty of all types of people, from the person who walks through our doors at the Festivals, to celebrities, such as Joanie Laurer, a former World Wrestling Federation character known as Chyna. Whether common or rare, the feathers Krystyna uses to create fans, masks and custom items brings out the natural inner beauty in each one of her customers.
