Thought of the Week: January 12, 2003

A Time for New Beginnings:
Bountiful Brainstorming

Committing to make changes in your life is but the beginning of the process.  Now that you have been introduced to the principles of what make your commitment a reality - Envision, Take Action, Perform, Deliver - you are ready to take the next exciting step. (See A Time for New Beginnings).

Bountiful Brainstorming

If you have never performed the ritual of brainstorming, you will soon discover it's benefits.  In the business application, brainstorming is used to solve problems by developing ideasHousehold 076.jpg (31827 bytes) and solutions through unrestrained discussion.  Specifically, writing down every idea, comment, and suggestion without considering whether it will work or not.  We are going to employ this same application with your personal goals.

Step #1:  Is Your Keyboard & Screen Ready?

Create a folder in your computer titled "Your Name."  You then must create a Word document entitled "Brainstorming 2003."  Close your eyes and take a few deep breathes to relax your muscles and mind.

Step #2:  Let your Imagination Run Wild

Now, the fun can begin.  Depending on your goals for the year, type out every thought that comes to mind.  Write down where you want to go, what you want to accomplish, family activities you want to plan, personal improvements you wish to experience, and changes you want to make on your home.  There is no wrong or right goal.  Negative and "I can never do that" thinking is not permitted at this juncture.

Step #3:  Organize Your List By Category

Since your mind has been emptied of your wants and aspirations, it's time to organize your list.  Breakdown your list by categories.  Here are some categories I have used:

Health Home
Travel Family
Spiritual Education
Friendships Career

Prioritize your list within each category.  Once you have prioritized your list, you are ready to enter the next stage of the process.

Next Week!

Next week, we will cover the principle of "Resources for Results."  We can't succeed in our goals alone.  We need to identify the people, places, and resources to effect the changes we want in our lives.
