Romance & You
People You Should Know
Bolivian Mother

Photo and poem by
Rosemary Halawa
© 2004 Rosemary Halawa
I focused, clicked and snapped
In that second I had captured in film
A Bolivian Madonna and child
A universal picture of love and hope
Life-carrier, life-giver, life-nourisher
So bright and colorful
A pretty picture indeed!
But after the film was developed
It was not a picture
Of mother and child
beaming in the sunshine
Instead it reveled
a dark, sad and worried look
Of one who did not know
Where her daily bread would come
That day
The picture would have been perfect
If I had taken at their home
Or if I had only taken before 8 am that morning
In this street where people wait
To be picked up to work for the day
But at 11 am I had captured
Not a pretty picture of mother and child
But a photograph
Of the uncertain future of the poor
God give her daily bread*.
