The Gift of Giving:  Be a Volunteer

One of the benefits of the Gift of Giving as it applies to "volunteering" is the overall feeling of good will.  Volunteering involves giving of one's time and energy for whatever task is presented.  Volunteering is the one unselfish act we can perform and end the day with a warm smile.

Why Should I Volunteer?

One way we can bring a feeling of self-worth and gratification is by helping others.  It is healthy, both spiritually and mentally, to reach out to others.  As we live our hectic daily lives, it is too easy to fall into a mode of "me" living.  Whether in small or large way, the gift of giving to others will surely enhance our lives while assisting others.

Where Do I Start?

Volunteering can take all forms.  You can begin in your own neighborhood.  In the spring and summer, volunteer to assist in keeping the entryway to your subdivision or park area attractive (weeding, pick up trash, etc).  If you belong to a church, volunteer to help in projects or events.

Have you participated in a fundraiser for a particular cause?  The events are as diverse as the needs.   From the American Cancer Society to fundraisers for your local hospital, there is always a need.  How do you know what volunteer activity is best for you?  Ask yourself these questions:

What cause(s) do I feel passionate about?
Is there an event that touches me personally?  (A friend has/had breast cancer, for example).
Is there a cause or area of interest I would like to explore and help others as the same time. (Become a tutor in language, math or other subject at a local junior college, for example).

Take A Step Forward:  Volunteer

Getting involved in volunteering means getting involved with life.  If you are unsure about how you want to proceed, here are some ideas to get you started:

Peruse the Internet for fundraising or volunteer activities.
Contact your local Chamber of Commerce for information.
Talk with friends and co-workers and ask about events in their area.
Check with your local library to see if a local magazine is distributed for free.  Many times, these magazines list fundraising activities in your area.

Remember to reach out and give the gift of giving.  You will be so glad you did!
