Be A Published Author:
Write for an On-line Magazine

Can anything be more exciting than connecting with readers from every corner of the world! With the click of the mouse, you can write a note to Australia, say hello to Czechoslovakia, wish a happy week to Greece, and howdy to Texas. Never in the history of the world has communication via the written word had such an expansive audience.

If you want to be a published author or writer, consider submitting a story or article to an on-line magazine.

How do I start?

If you would like to write for the Internet community, think about what you want to share. Are you interested in writing fiction stories? Do you have ideas for self-help articles? Is there an experience or challenge you’ve faced and overcome that you wish to tell? Are you an author seeking to expand her web presence? Before approaching an on-line magazine (also known as e-zine), determine why and what you are planning to write.

Finding the On-line Magazine for Me

There are literally millions of web-sites on the Internet covering every subject from Astronomy to Zoology. Browse the web for sites to which you would be interested in submitting a story or query (letter pitching an idea). Visit sites that are relevant to your topics. Utilize the search engines to help focus your search.

Let’s take an example. For writers who wish to target writing related publications, you could visit the following web-sites:

www.writingcorner.com

www.bylinemagazine.com

www.writerswrite.com

www.writerpages.com

www.magazineyellowpages.com

www.writing-world.com

How About Quitting My Day Job?

The dream statement of any writer is "I can quit my day job." The beauty about writing is that you can begin part-time while you work at a day job. When you venture into the business of submitting articles and stories to an on-line magazine, you need to carefully read the writer’s guidelines. Some sites pay, some do not. In lieu of monetary compensation, submitters may be provided a bio and link to a personal web-site. Keep in mind there are many benefits to having your work published on-line. You can accumulate "clips" of published work, establish a web presence in a niche market, gain experience working with editors, and hone your writing craft.

Expertise on a Subject: Become a Columnist

If you can commit to a writing schedule, possess experience/knowledge in a specific field, and enjoy sharing information with others, becoming a columnist may be for you. As discussed above, do your research to find an on-line magazine that matches your expertise. Contact the editor via an introductory e-mail. Be specific and succinct; and be prepared to provide writing samples. Some sites may not pay, particularly if you have no previous publishing credits. However, the experience, e-mails from your readers, and credibility as a columnist will be well worth your time!

Be Aware of Your Publishing Rights!

It is critical that you keep abreast of your rights as a submitter. Read the writer’s guidelines very carefully. Upon publication, does the magazine retain all rights to the article or story? Will the site maintain a copy in their electronic archives only? Would the site be open to publishing a previously published piece?

If you have questions about copyright and rights of an author, I would recommend reading "The Writer’s Legal Guide" by Tad Crawford. (ISBN#1-58115-004-0). Mr. Crawford does a thorough job of detailing legal issues and topics wherein a writer should be well versed.
