Thought of the Week: August 18, 2002

"Character is Destiny"

Destiny - a predetermined course.

Is our character predetermined?  Not according to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus (540-580 B.C.).  From his point of view, our "personality and habitual behavior determine one's destiny."

Cjz50232.jpg (73190 bytes)From the moment we are created, the personality qualities of our parents and generations of antecedents are instilled upon our being.  Behavior, on the other hand, can be influenced by a myriad scenarios and individual elements.  Home, community, people, social customs, religion, education, and country of your birth can all influence behavior.

How do the two play off each other?  Does our personality slant us towards a specific type of behavior given a particular environment?  Interesting question.  Perhaps we can interpret Heraclitus' statement "character is destiny" in this way:  We as intelligent human beings can take control of our destiny of character by recognizing our personality traits and choosing positive behavior in our daily life.

After all, what we believe ourselves to be, we can become.

Goal for the Week!

Consider your personality and behavior and how it has shaped your life.  Are there behavior traits that you would like to control or change?  Discover the means and resources to make change and do it!
