Also, if you want a little
Why do you enjoy reading and writing romance? I enjoy reading romance because I love happy endings and I’m a hopeless romantic. I enjoy writing romance for the same reasons but I also love all the crazy, exciting, and romantic emotions that link men and women. It’s so fun to write about these encounters. By nature, men and women are so different. As a writer I get to play off these differences and I find it not only entertaining but also very enjoyable. Tell us about Fatal Embrace. Fatal Embrace is a romantic suspense set in the beautiful mountains of Montana. The heroine, Jessica Stanson, is a high-spirited horse trainer who stumbled into the perfect job on one of the most elite ranches in the state. Her boss, and ex-detective, Michael Carven didn’t want her there and made no attempt to hide it. An explosive wave of violence hits the small town nestled deep in the mountains as a cunning serial killer roams about. If having a killer on the loose wasn’t enough, both of their worlds collide when Jessica becomes the only witness. Cosmopolitan magazine is including an adaptation of Fatal Embrace in their January 2005 issue (available December 13). Please explain to our readers how something like this is set up. My editor sent out an ARC (Advance Review Copy) for review and within five days Cosmo called asking if they could excerpt 12 pages. Instead of excerpting they ended up doing a 1500 word adaptation. It's been a lot of fun and a nice little Christmas bonus too. I hope everyone enjoys the piece when it comes out. What is your writing process creating a story with mystery/suspense elements? I first think out the romance aspect because that is the foundation of the story… to me it’s the most important part. I then weave the mystery/suspense through it. It’s very important that the romance and suspense is not choppy but blended so it flows. I hope I pull that off in my stories. What characteristics do you like to give your hero and heroine? Hmmm…that’s a tough one…there are so many. I think one of the most important characteristics I can give my heroes and heroines is humor. I believe it’s a key element that makes my characters real. In Fatal Embrace, the heroine, Jessica is very humorous and it gets on Michael’s nerves…so sparks fly. A dual question: What challenges did you encounter writing Fatal Embrace? Is writing mystery/suspense more difficult than another subgenre of romance? I didn’t have any real challenges writing Fatal Embrace, however I did have to do a lot of research. The story is heavy with police procedural so it was vital that I make it as accurate as possible. Fatal Embrace also has a serial killer in it so I had to read many books on serial killers. I’m not sure if writing mystery/suspense is more difficult than another subgenre because I’ve only written suspense. However, I would love to write a tragic love story that would make you weeps for days…so I’ll find out soon how different the two can be.
