Quotes & Poetry

Thought of the Week: April 27, 2003

"What we really are matters more than
what others say we are."

The concept of what we think of ourselves is not a unique idea.  In fact, this statement ties in very well with Victor Hugo's quotation "the supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved, loved for ourselves."   The trick is remembering to keep the view of ourselves positive and constructive.

Once again, how we treat our mate by what we say and do will influence his/her self-concept.  As much as we attempt to ignore a negative comment from a mate, deep down negative statements can take root.

Daily Positive Reinforcement

Most motivational speakers will advise their listeners that positive reinforcement is critical to a strong self-concept.  Taking the time to say a kind word or statement of support to your mate benefits your relationship in numerous ways.

*Keeps the communication channels clear
*Builds the bond you share as a couple
*Helps your mate feel good about himself/herself

Daily positive reinforcement can be done in the small things.  A simple, "dinner was delicious" is surely appreciated.  Perhaps say, "you look handsome today" before he leaves for work.  When we verbally acknowledge to our loved one what we admire about him (physical, mental, and spiritual), they know we truly care.
