__________________ My fiancé, Leon, lives in New York. I live in Michigan. Christmas 2005 was going to be a fun one. My kids and I planned on going to visit Leon over the holiday, it would be their first trip to New York City, and we were going to have some fun. Leon works at the Shubert Theater, so one of the things we were going to do was to see Spamalot, which was playing at the theater. Leon bought us tickets but said he had to do some work backstage during the show so he wouldn’t be joining us. At intermission Leon came out and told me that one of the security guards was going to come get us after the show so we could go backstage and meet the cast. This sounded like a lot of fun and the kids were excited. As promised, when the curtain went down, the security guard came up and escorted us backstage. When we got in the back he directed us up the stairs, which then put us on stage. As I reached the top of the stairs we were greeted by the cast, and oddly, they seemed to all have their attention on me. I stopped in my tracks and started looking around, I almost felt like a deer in a spotlight. My eyes scanned the stage and came to rest on Leon, dressed like one of King Arthur’s Knights. Now I was feeling a little funny. I turned to the security guard and said, "I’m not going out there." I thought Leon had some silly act planned and the curtain was going to go up and I would have to be part of it. The guard nudged me and told me to get out there. So I slowly, almost dazedly, walked over to Leon. He began speaking, reciting a poem he wrote. I heard the poem, but at the same time it went right through me. I suddenly realized what was going on. I was smiling from ear to ear, but almost dumbfounded, I was in another world, hearing but not hearing. Seeing but not seeing. I remember looking at my daughter and she was smiling and crying. My son was smiling. I turned back to Leon and he got down on one knee and said: Will you be my wife, I felt like jumping up and down, my mind was going warp speed, but I managed to get out a "YES!" Suddenly everyone whooped and shouted, congratulations, hugs and kisses, and then I saw his parents, and two very good friends of his family. They had been there the whole time. It was so spectacular to have loved ones around when he asked. Soon I also found out that he had someone taking pictures and someone videotaped it. I hadn’t noticed any of that, but I am so grateful he had the forethought to have that done. It is a memory I will always treasure and be able to watch any time I want. Who says fairy tales don’t come true? My knight in shining armor came for me!
