Interview with Adam Cohen

Winning Writers is a literary resource site founded by Adam Cohen and Jendi Reiter in 2001. We specialize in information about poetry contests. These contests are today's most common route to recognition and publication for emerging poets. Poetry Contest Insider, our online database, profiles over 650 contests. In the profiles we give our opinion about the quality of each contest, and link to the work of recent winners and judges whenever possible. There are so many contests to choose from. We help poets enter the ones that are right for their style of work and stage of development. The database represents knowledge that would take someone years to acquire on their own.

Poets can get a taste of our contest profiles by subscribing to our free email newsletter. On subscribing, you get online access to The Best Free Poetry Contests, a mini-database that profiles over 100 free contests.

Not only do we help poets navigate the many legitimate contests, we help them avoid 'vanity contests'. These widely advertised sham contests give the appearance of prestige and selectivity, but in fact praise most of the work they receive to induce poets to buy anthologies and attend expensive conventions. These contests waste the money and abuse the emotions of poets. Winning Writers sponsors a special parody contest, the Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest, to call attention to this problem. This contest is free to enter and will award $1,609 in prizes this year. The deadline is April 1.

Besides the Wergle Flomp contest, Winning Writers sponsors a War Poetry Contest. We felt this important subject was underserved by other literary outlets. What attention is given usually has a strong political bias. We wanted a contest that was more wide-ranging, more free of assumptions. We will award $3,000 in prizes this year. The $12 entry fee includes three months of access to Poetry Contest Insider. The deadline is May 31.

All the winning poems from the past three years of Wergle Flomp and War Poetry Contests may be read online at WinningWriters.com. We also provide extensive advice for contestants at http://www.winningwriters.com/warcontest/advice.htm. These insights come from reading and comparing thousands of poems. We recommend this page to all poets.

Winning Writers assists John Reid of Australia with three contests that he sponsors. John Reid has published numerous novels under the name of Tom Howard. The Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest is now in its 13th year. Fiction and nonfiction pieces are accepted, up to 8,000 words. $2,575 in prizes will be awarded, and the entry fee is $10. Work that has been previously published is welcome, as is unpublished work. The deadline is March 31.

The Margaret Reid Poetry Contest seeks poems in traditional verse forms, such as sonnets and haiku. $2,000 in prizes will be awarded, and the entry fee is $5 for every 25 lines. The deadline is June 30. The Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest is open to poems in all styles and themes. It will also award $2,000 in prizes, and the entry fee is again $5 for every 25 lines. The deadline is September 30.

While we specialize in poetry and poetry contests, we have assembled a directory of carefully selected resources that will benefit all writers. Categories include business and legal resources, literary journals and presses, literary societies, markets for writers, reference sites and resources for teachers and students. All of this can be reached from our home page at www.WinningWriters.com.
