The Writing Craft : Articles

The Places our Characters Live

Contemporary romance is the most widely read romance category.  The romance author uses plots, places, and people to create the stories we love to read.

One benefit to reading a good romance is being transported to locations throughout the globe.

We all have favorite geographical locations where our romance stories occur.  The locales are as diverse as the plots.  Here are some places where these romance authors have taken us--

Homeport, Nora Roberts Maine, New York, Italy
The Runaway Princess, Patricia Forsythe (January 2001, Silhouette Romance) Arizona
Tears of the Moon, Nora Roberts Ireland
Texas Lucky!; Texas Chase!; Texas Sage!, Sandra Brown Texas

Read a romance and see the world....

Rough Around the Edges, Marie Ferrarella (March 2001, Silhouette Romance)  California
Amber Beach, Elizabeth Lowell San Juan Islands, Pacific Northwest, America
Daddy in Dress Blues, Cathie Linz (September 2000, Silhouette Romance) Illinois
The Blessing, Jude Deveraux Kentucky

Wherever the heroine and hero take us, we learn a little about the places they live and travel.  The next contemporary romance you read, stop and enjoy the scenery!
