Couples will live with the bride’s parents until they can set up their own home the following spring. The next generation continues the traditions of their parents by having children and passing on the heritage of their religion. Both men and women maintain specific roles in the Amish community. Because it is a patriarchal society, men are the head of the family and fulfill the decision-making positions in the community. The men tend to the farm responsibilities of the family. Women take on the role of mother and household management by the rearing of children, cooking, washing, cleaning, sewing, and maintenance of the family garden.
