Styles of the Past

Viewing photographs of the past provides us a glimpse into what life must have been like for the subject.  Clothes, hairstyles, and facial features help paint a perspective of the time.  Photographs also provide a useful supplement to the diary entries, historical facts and writings of the period.

19thwoman1.JPG (10589 bytes)The original photograph is in superb condition. The photograph was taken in Joliet, Illinois.  The clarity is rich and the details of her dress provide a wonderful example of style and taste for her time.

The bodice of her dress has at least 16 buttons, disappearing beneath the lace at the collar.  Fitted sleeves are softened by the solid colored strip of fabric at the wrist.  The lady's jewelry consists of small earrings, a ring on her middle right finger and what appears to be a chain and watch fob at her waist.

The dominating feature in the photograph is the woman's hat.  This fabulous hat adorned with feathers is perched atop beautifully styled hair.  We can only presume she was a lady of style and taste.  A small brooch and necklace decorate the white collar of her bodice.  Although she is wearing spectacles, the wire rims do not detract from her attractive face.

This photograph provides a marvelous example of a detailed bodice, jewelry and  overall hairstyle of the late 19th century.

Note the many buttons, each with a meticulously sewn button hole.  The intricate plaid lapels add design and color to the bodice.

Her hair is pulled back and placed in a bun at the top of her head.  Long hair must have been a nuisance for these ladies (and they wore it very long). It must have been a chore to wash and dry.  In addition, the weight of it must have been tiring at times.
