Skating for Entertainment


Crs50028.jpg (19004 bytes) Skating became a very popular activity in the second half of the nineteenth century.  The first all-metal, hardened-steel skates were developed in 1848 by E.W. Bushnell.  Prior to this design, skates were constructed of either wrought-iron or wood.  Because of this new metal design, a renewed interest in skating commenced.

Jackson Haines

Mr. Haines was a ballet master and actor. He incorporated the free-flowing movements of ballet and ice skating. He was named United States Champion skater in 1863.  He moved to Vienna to establish a skating school.  The style of skating he taught was called "Haines International Style."

By 1876, the production of artificial ice had been developed.  Indoor rinks soon began to appear.  Ice skating was no longer restricted to the winter season.  This provided an opportunity for professional skating events.  The first such performance occurred in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1879.  Hundreds of masked skaters performed to the music played by Gilmore's Serenade Band.
