Thought of the Week: July 21, 2002

"Home is where the heart is."

Household 113.jpg (65650 bytes)There is something about being home that can be pleasant to the senses and spirit.  Do you recall how good it feels to sleep in your own bed after returning from a business trip or vacation?  The familiar surroundings of our home lure us back into our comfort zone.

The Proverb

Where did the proverb, "home is where the heart is" come from? It is believed that Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23-79) made the statement.  The first time the saying is referred to in literature is in J.J. McCloskey's book, "Davey Crockett and Other Plays" in 1870.  He said, "Well, home, they say, is where the heart is."

Hearth & Home

When you consider what makes your home a place in your heart, it can be a myriad of things: physical environment of home, history of the house, family, or neighborhood.  Whatever emotional ties connect you to your home, it is important to appreciate the positive attributes of our homes.

Goal for the Week!

Take literally one minute each day this week and say, "I appreciate (fill in the blank) in my home today."  Here is an example to start you off.  "I appreciate the convenience of a hot shower in the morning in my home today."  (Believe it or not, there are homes that don't have the luxury!)
