Thought of the Week: January 5, 2003

A Time for New Beginnings:
Commit to The Plan

January is a time for new beginnings.

Today is the day to make the commitment to achieve your vision for the future.  How many of us have yearned to be smarter, more attractive, wiser, compassionate or well traveled?  Perhaps we want to spend more quality time with our family and/or friends.  There are a myriad of individualized needs and desires that go unfulfilled.

How do we become the fortunate few that actually meet a goal, live a vision, embrace the many positive elements that is life?  The first step is making the commitment to see your goal reached.

The Truth of Commitment

What is the true meaning of "commitment?"  To be committed is to pledge oneself to an issue or goal.  It means to...

Envision

Take Action

Perform

Deliver

Envision:  To envision is to picture an image in your mind.  This can be a person (you), place, or thing.  A vision of reality begins with an image of what you wish to accomplish.

Take Action:  Most people stop at the "Envision" step of commitment.  One must initialize movement in order to effect change.  Taking action includes identifying who, what, where, and how you are going to make your vision a reality.

Perform:  The "Perform" step is the actual implementation of your commitment.  This means following through on the actions you have planned for yourself.

Deliver:  Delivering on your expectations depends on your ability to persevere with your plan.  When circumstances, perceived impediments, or people interfere with your plan, find a way to meet the challenge.

The Principles of The Plan

Over the next series of articles, we plan to share a number of basic principles for you to develop "The Plan" in your life.  These principles will include "Bountiful Brainstorming," "5-Minute Mental Moments," and "Advice from the Trenches."  We anticipate that you can incorporate some of the principles to create "The Plan" that works for you.

My Plan for the Coming Year

One project that I am committed to for "The Plan: 2003" is assisting individuals in the area of communication and public speaking.

Speaking skills is a challenge for many people.  Fear, lack of knowledge, and convenient access to resources make acquiring effective speaking and communication skills difficult.  Whether a person is trying to find a job, seeking upward mobility in their career, or wish to gain confidence in daily communication, it is my endeavor in 2003 to help others with this skill.

I'll keep you posted on my progress.  Make sure and let me know how you are doing with your plan.

Next Week!

Next week, we will cover the principle of "Bountiful Brainstorming."  From the endless possibilities stored in your mind, you can create dozens of places to begin your journey.
